A federal judge’s impending decision in the U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust case against Google may dramatically alter the search engine market and accelerate AI’s disruption of the sector. The ruling, expected in August, could force structural changes to Google’s business model just as generative AI tools begin challenging its dominant position.

Prosecutors have proposed sweeping remedies including divestiture of Chrome, restrictions on default search agreements, and mandatory data sharing with competitors. These measures aim to create openings for AI-powered search alternatives by applying legal precedents from the Microsoft antitrust case two decades ago.

Google maintains its 90% U.S. search market share through $20 billion annual payments to Apple and other partners. The tech giant warns that drastic interventions would cause irreparable harm, preferring negotiated adjustments to its partnership terms. Legal analysts suggest the outcome could determine whether emerging AI services gain meaningful traction against the entrenched search leader.
